SC issues apology for six-year delay in 21-year-old double murder case

The Supreme Court on Friday issued a written order addressing a six-year delay in deciding an appeal related to a double murder case in Wazirabad, Punjab. The appeal, heard by the Shariat Appellate Bench, was initially filed in 2018. The accused, Imran alias Mani, had been charged with double murder and adultery 21 years ago. The Shariat Appellate Bench acquitted him due to a lack of evidence. The Supreme Court expressed regret over the prolonged delay, noting that the Shariat Bench had remained inactive for an extended period. The order stated, "The judges should know their duties to deliver justice." The court further emphasised that there is no provision in the Constitution allowing the Shariat Bench to remain inactive. The order also stressed the importance of judges being available to hear criminal cases, even during the summer vacation, to ensure timely justice.
