Govt, opposition agree on power-sharing formula

After the conclusion of the government formation process subsequent to the February 8 elections, discussions between the government and opposition regarding the establishment of National Assembly’s standing committees are nearing completion. A framework for the formation of NA committees and power-sharing arrangements between the government and opposition has been outlined. According to documents obtained by The Express Tribune, the distribution of chairmanships reflects a balance, with the government coalition slated to lead 26 committees, and the opposition to head 11 committees. As per the arrangement, the PML-N is set to chair 14 committees, followed by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) with eight, MQM-Pakistan with two, and PML-Q and the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) each chairing one committee. From the opposition, independent members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) will chair 10 standing committees, while one committee will be chaired by JUI-F. According to the documentation, each standing committee will comprise 20 members, with 14 from the government and six from opposition parties. The composition will include seven members from PML-N, four from PPP, and one each from PML-Q and MQM-P. Furthermore, five independent PTI members and one from JUI-F will be appointed to each standing committee based on quota. The Rules and Regulations Privilege Committee will consist of 22 members, with 15 from the government and seven from the opposition. Similarly, the Government Assurances Committee will have 16 members, with 11 from the government and five from the opposition. The House and Library Committee will include 13 members, with nine from the government and four from the opposition. In the 22-member Kashmir Committee, the government will hold 15 positions, with the opposition comprising seven members. Lastly, the House Business Advisory Committee will consist of 26 members, with 18 from the government and eight from the opposition.
