Prominent Kashmiri leader Prof Nazir Ahmed Shawl passes away in London

The 77-year-old succumbed to multiple ailments, with kidney failure identified as the primary cause of his untimely demise. Professor Shawl, a multilingual individual, educator, poet, and human rights advocate, was a true pioneer in the struggle for the self-determination rights of the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). His passing is considered a significant loss to the global voice of the Kashmir cause. Barrister Abdul Majid Tramboo expressed his grief, stating, "We have lost a dedicated leader, but also a true family man. I have lost someone who is truly my brother. The premier, Chaudhry Anwarul Haq, President Barrister Sultan Mehmood, President PML-N AJK chapter Shah Ghulam Qadir, Speaker Chaudhry Latif Akbar, and APHC leader Altaf Ahmad Bhat acknowledged the impact of Shawl's death on the ongoing liberation struggle, describing it as a literary loss. Born on October 13, 1946, in Baramulla, Professor Shawl graduated in sciences from Kashmir University in Srinagar and pursued post-graduation in Botany from the same institution. Read more: Eight Kashmiris martyred in IIOJK Throughout his illustrious career, he held various positions, including professor and researcher in Botany, coordinator of UNICEF-assisted project PECR, and Chief Test Administrator at Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS-Bombay). Professor Shawl's writings emphasised human rights concerns in different conflict areas, with a particular focus on the Kashmir cause and grave human rights violations in IIOJK. As the chief editor of Kashmir Press International (KPI), he played a vital role in bringing attention to the issues faced by the Kashmiri people. Additionally, he established a think tank, the South Asia Centre for Peace and Human Rights, of which he served as the chairman in London. Professor Shawl's contributions will be remembered for his matchless sacrifices for the Kashmir cause.
